Rainsbrook STC – Unify CONNECT

The Customer

Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre accommodates up to 87 young people between the ages of 12-18 who have committed a criminal offence. Rainsbrook STC is managed by MTC NOVO, who are committed to reducing reoffending rates in the UK.

The Challenge

The inherited phone system was unsupportable, becoming unreliable and posed a risk to Site; it was paramount that there was a stable and reliable means for parents/carers, friends and partner organisations to contact the STC.

Children had to make requests through staff to use the telephones and it was a requirement to look at different communication options for our children.

The Solution

The introduction of Unify CONNECT was a turning point within Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre, where Children previously had to go through a member of staff to make calls, they now have the freedom to make these from the comfort of their own room, when they need to.

The initial implementation process went successfully. There were initial teething problems for both staff and young people, which would be expected when introducing a completely new system to a site which had previously used another system for 17 years.

However, since the launch of the new system staff, young people and external stakeholders understand how to make and receive calls. Turning off the ability that allowed staff to put calls through to young people’s rooms has been a turning point for the Centre and its ability to monitor and manage phone calls.
